The Ophthalmologist Power List 2023 Announced
The Ophthalmologist Power List 2023 has been named. This list, has become a truly globally event, championing the leaders and innovators in ophthalmology around the world. This year, the list is celebrating its 10th year, highlighting the excellence and impact of the most influential and inspirational people in ophthalmology. The Ophthalmologist Power List 2023 shines the spotlight on 100 individuals who have demonstrated “Ten Years of Excellence and Impact in Ophthalmology.”
Vision Research Foundation Scientific Director, Professor Helen Danesh-Meyer was named number 18 on the Power List. Professor Helen Danesh-Meyer is a highly regarded international authority in glaucoma and neuro-ophthalmology. She is an accomplished educator, teaching undergraduate and postgraduate optometry and ophthalmology nationally and internationally. With over 120 published articles and numerous research grants and awards, Professor Danesh-Meyer is recognised for her outstanding research contributions.
She is also a founding Trustee and Chairperson of Glaucoma New Zealand, a charitable trust for the prevention of blindness from glaucoma. Helen regularly contributes to public awareness campaigns and has been awarded the Paul Harris Rotary Medal for her significant contributions to the community. Earlier this year she was awarded a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to ophthalmology in the King’s New Year honours list for her contribution to the community. In 2020, Helen founded the Vision Research Foundation to support bright research minds to stay in New Zealand, complete ground-breaking research and create new patient solutions that positively impact human lives.
When asked what she credits most for her successful career, Professor Danesh-Meyer responded “Tenacity, passion, and a bit of luck. My role model is my mother, who was one of the early female physicians in Iran; she faced extraordinary challenges to pursue a career as a woman in medicine.”
